The specific health regulations governing import are provided in greater detail under "Further info".
Animal by-products must comply with the requirements set out in Regulation (EC) No 1069/2009 and Regulation (EU) No 142/2011.
A TRACES notification is mandatory in all cases provided for in Article 48 of Regulation (EC) 1069/2009.
The shipment must be accompanied by a commercial document as stipulated in Regulation (EU) No 142/2011 (see below under "Commercial document").
Certain animal by-products require neither a TRACES notification nor a commercial document (e.g. "ready-to-use pet food", hunting trophies and animal products) (see "More information" in the document "Importing ABP from the EU and Norway").
An import licence from the veterinary health authority issued by the FSVO is not required to import Category 3 animal by-products.
An import licence is required for all animal by-products that cannot be imported under standard conditions (C1 and C2 products). Please submit a written import application to the FSVO (see under "Import applications").
The establishment of origin must be licensed to import.
The protective measures in force on the day of import apply in all cases.
Please note that it is not possible to import all categories of animals and goods into Switzerland at all border crossing points. The customs authorities have full autonomy in determining the responsibilities of each customs post.
The competent cantonal authorities check the prescribed health certificates or commercial documentation as part of their control activities.
Certain animal species are additionally subject to species conservation provisions. Please check the conservation status in the CITES species list (see "Further information") and submit an import application where necessary (see "Import applications"). If an import license is required, the species conservation control must be performed after the animals have been imported.
The shipment must be notified to the customs authority and presented to the chosen species conservation control office within 48 hours (two working days) (see "Further information"). The fee for the species conservation control will be collected in advance by the customs authority.
